December 2013 - Practicum 1 Summary

December 2013 - Practicum 1 Summary

This semester, I began the Practicum 1 course. In the span of a few months, I participated in various activities to gain hours. In the beginning, I started to write readers for our news show, sat in on Wellness TV interviews, and also filmed women’s volleyball with Tony as a supervisor. Tony taught me a lot about sports shots and making sure I get the right amount of footage and variety for the package. I took a lot of wide, medium, and close up shots and at the first time I shot a game, I got hit in the head with the volleyball, ironically enough.
Since I was in Broadcast Writing while I was in Practicum 1, I learned a lot about writing readers for the news show. In the beginning, I had problems with still writing in AP style, but when I was learning more of how to write in broadcast style and saw what Rachel and Dr. Bradford did to fix my readers, I kept on improving. Most of my hours came from the readers I wrote, which varied anywhere from local, to international, and also events on campus. Also, when we were in the studio filming the show, I always made sure I learned something different each time I was there. I ran the teleprompter one time, operated the camera, hooked up the audio, and then there was that one time where we completely redid the studio, added more lights and we all had to figure out which was which.
After fall break, I was offered an opportunity to edit photos for the Interlachen. Toward the second half of the semester, the last of my hours came from editing in the lab. I used the Lightroom software and learned how to work with that. My experience with photoshop and also the Photojournalism class that I am enrolled in really helped me develop my editing skills. The pictures I have been editing for Interlachen have been campus events, sports, and just general news. I have been editing a lot to make sure that there are great quality photos for our yearbook, and I always make sure that the pictures are a little bit brighter for when they get printed. I have been working closely with Dion and Bob Drake and they have taught me a lot about the skills that I have with editing pictures and also taking pictures.
However, my favorite time I had this semester was definitely when I was on the round table discussion for the entertainment section of the news show. This was an idea that Dion had in mind, and he presented it on our Practicum facebook page. I was very excited for this opportunity and jumped right in. We recorded a discussion about Britney Spears for 14 minutes and Olivia had cut it down to about 3 minutes. I really enjoyed how the chemistry flowed; especially with something that was pretty much unscripted. I definitely would love to do that again. The only thing I think we would need to fix is the audio and how we set up the cameras—but for the first time, the finished product looked polished.
I am happy that I learned a lot of new things and got involved in different projects, and I hope to even learn more in my next few semesters.

11-25-13

I was editing for Interlachen again and came across a problem with lightroom -- It closed me out because our hard drive was full. However, I was able to edit a handful of volleyball pictures and some more soccer pictures.

11-19-13

Today, I was editing for Interlachen from 11:30-12:30. I was editing with Lightroom and went through some pictures from the soccer games. It was very hard to work with some of the pictures since sports is all about timing, and also I had to brighten a lot of pictures.

11-12-13

Today I was editing for the Interlachen. I was figuring out how to use lightroom and was there for about an hour. I like photoshop better than lightroom since I am more familiar with it and know what i'm doing, but I still enjoyed my time editing pictures.

I worked in the studio helping Jon and Ryan with their sports show. I set up the lights, set up the audio, set up the cameras, and basically did everything I could. I was going to direct the show but unfortunately, I had to leave early because of work. The boys didn't have the script ready, which is why everything probably took so long, and at that point in time, I noticed that girls are more organized in the studio.

11-11-13

Today was my first time in front of the camera. I was on Entertainment Rewind today, and we did a special "round table" discussion. It was me, Dion, Olivia, and TJ on camera discussing Britney Spears. It was great to work with them and be able to do improv things and just be myself without a script. I hope to continue the round table and actually make it into something. Fingers crossed. Also, we took a selfie.

On the 22nd of October, I shot for the Interlachen for Southern's Got Talent. One of my pictures ended up getting published in the Southern. Most of my pictures came out good; it's just difficult because the lighting in Branscomb absolutely sucks and I had to put the aperture wayyyyyyy down. However, I had a fun time.

Today I was in the studio. I was operating the camera and also helped position the angle of the camera before we started the newscast. It was surprising that we got out there that quick, with the studio being new. However, the lighting looked so much better and everyone did a great job.

9/21/13

After Rob and I filmed Fraternity Bid Day, we headed over to the studio to edit our package. It took us a while to get started because something happened with the DV and HDV and it was a bunch of crap. Then Dr. Bradford graciously showed up and saved the day and helped her FAVORITE Buckley and Rob with the DV/HDV issues. We decided that since we did not get a sot, we just stuck to the voice over. We got a lot of nat sound and definitely included that in our package. It's going to be on the news show this Wednesday and will be at most 45 seconds.

Today Rob and I ventured into the greek quad and bandshell for a solid 3 hours, covering fraternity bid day. We started at the bandshell and filmed people accepting their bids, members of the fraternities hugging them and welcoming them with letters, all the sappy stuff. We got different angles of the new members at the bandshell and then went to the greek quad and filmed every single fraternity doing their traditions as well as getting fantastic Nat Sound. It went very successful and we got a lot of great shots.

9/9/13

Today was the first newscast of the year. I spent most of my time in the control room observing but I learned a lot today. I saw how the teleprompter functions and observed how Olivia had to re-do things when she mispronounced or if she didn't like it. I also discovered how the audio works with the soundboard and mic. We were there a little longer than people had planned, but it was a great first show  and flowed well.

I submitted a reader to Rachel Belli. It was a national reader for the news show about a 64 year old woman that swam from Cuba to Florida. I struggled a bit with the tenses since the story was a few days ago, however, other than that, everything went well.

9/6/13

Tonight I went and shot footage of the women's volleyball game. Tony was supervising and also Rob Pandolfino was there. I learned how to use a broadcast camera (since I'm used to working with DSLRs) and got some good shots and close ups of players and the coaches. We moved around the gym and got different angles, and I actually got hit in the head with a volleyball today (I barely felt it). No big deal. However, FSC lost and the game was split. After the game ended, we interviewed the libero and an outside player. We got some commentary from them and I think we got some great shots for b-roll.

9/5/13 - my first hour!

I submitted my reader about Greek Life to Rachel Belli for the news show. It was the first one I've ever written and the only edits I had to make was changing the exact numbers to estimations. I submitted it two days before the due date.
